I had a funny story during yesterday's bike ride
This story happened spontaneously when I reached my last milestone, 7 kilometers from my city. At that point, I should have headed back to the city, but instead, I decided to take a small break near the fields and tried to capture the sunset. While I was resting, I started checking the photos on my phone and deciding which ones I wanted to keep. Then, while I was doing that, I suddenly noticed some unrecognizable speech coming from behind me. Naturally, I turned my head to see what was going on and who had decided to disturb me. That's when I noticed a strange old man, about 60 years old, sitting on an electric scooter and trying to speak to me.
At first, I couldn't correctly recognize one of the Russian words he said. It was "Здрастье," which means "hello," but because of the way he pronounced it, I thought it sounded like "gràcies" in Spanish, which means "thank you." That immediately left me very confused: why was that man speaking Spanish, and why was he saying "thank you" to me? It felt very, very strange to suddenly hear what sounded like Spanish near a small Russian-speaking village. Only about a minute later, when he gave me more context and repeated the word multiple times, did I finally realize what he wanted from me — and that he had actually been speaking Russian the whole time.
I think this misunderstanding happened because the man spoke a bit fast and had a noticeable Udmurt accent, which changed the pronunciation of the words. On top of that, he used the spoken Russian word "Здрастье," which, when said quickly with that accent, can apparently sound a bit like "gràcies." So, with his unusual pronunciation, it's probably not surprising that I couldn't understand him right away. And, of course, my tiredness after harvesting the potatoes probably also played a big role in this misunderstanding.
