I broke my bike, and this day was ridiculously unsuccessful

Today the weather was not very good. The sky was cloudy all day, but fortunately, I didn’t see any rain. The temperature was quite low, about 15–17 degrees, and it felt especially cold. Even other people started wearing their warm clothes, which showed me that the cold winter is coming soon. But that didn’t stop me, so I decided to go ride my bike. When I started, I felt a very cold wind because I was only wearing shorts and a summer sweatshirt. However, after riding for about 10 minutes, I started to feel warmer and more comfortable.

The broken part of my bike’s gear-shifting mechanism

When I left the city and rode about 3 kilometers, everything was fine. I enjoyed how my bike moved and how smoothly I could switch the gears. But that didn’t last long. When I reached the forest and started going down a big hill surrounded by trees, I felt something was wrong with my bike. I couldn’t shift the gears into first, and as I went down, the bike started making strange sounds. So, I parked it near a tree and checked. I immediately noticed that the gear-shifting mechanism was broken. I don’t know how it happened because I went down very carefully and slowly. And after my inspection, I decided to walk home with my bike for 4 kilometers.

You can see in the picture what was broken. I don’t know the exact word for it, so I just called it the gear-shifting mechanism—I hope you understand what I mean. Now I’m thinking about whether I should buy a new one or just wait until the next bike season next year. Looks like my 2-day bike season has already ended.
